Hand sew welt

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to hand sew welting to a welt constructed shoe.

Application

This unit applies to hand sewing a welt to a welt constructed shoe.

Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities. Work is performed within defined procedures under direct supervision.

The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices, which may include:

This unit requires the application of skills associated with planning and organising for safe and effective use of hand sewing technology and operations. This unit also requires an ability to interpret and communicate job related information, check the quality of outcomes and identify and address problems relating to own work. Self management skills are used to ensure work standards are achieved.

1 Inspect shoe

1.1 Shoes are inspected and customer advised on repair requirements and costs prior to commencing shoe repair

1.2 Job sheet is prepared and reviewed to ensure all requirements are included

1.3 Appropriate method of hand sewing welt replacement is determined according to workplace practices

2 Prepare for sewing

2.1 Original stitching is cut from sole to welt

2.2 Sole is stripped back to expose damaged welting

2.3 Needle type and size is selected and checked

2.4 Old stitching or welting is removed

2.5 Welt strip is skived, as required

3 Perform hand sewing

3.1 Sole is reattached to welt and stitched to achieve specified results and quality expectations

3.2 Threads are trimmed as required

3.3 Work is conducted according to OHS practices

4 Conduct final quality check

4.1 Final quality check is assessed for hand sewing operation

4.2 Welt and shoe is cleaned, polished and finished off to match as close as possible original shoe colour

4.3 Repaired shoes are packaged, labelled and stored
